A broader release to digital platforms Amazon and Google will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>River of Freedom <\/strong>was crowd-funded and distributed independently.&nbsp; It was the most watched film in New Zealand on 21st September and #10 at the NZ Box Office in its third week, nudging <em>Oppenheimer <\/em>out.&nbsp; Ignored by mainstream media and playing on only a few screens, audiences travelled from far and wide. Ticket sales were compared to <em>Barbie<\/em> and <em>Oppenheimer<\/em>, even their own <em>Lord of the Rings.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand&#8217;s primary media platform, Stuff, finally sent a reviewer to see the film: Graeme Tuckett reported &#8220;It took me a week to get a ticket. The film sold out its Wellington screenings for five straight days. The Thursday afternoon session I got into was also a sell-out.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaylene Barnes, director and editor is \u201creally proud of the success of our film in New Zealand and how it touched audiences.\u201d She is looking forward to the voyage of <strong>River of Freedom<\/strong> with Journeyman. \u201cWhat an opportunity for people the world over to experience New Zealand at its best\u2026&nbsp; and at its worst.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>River of Freedom<\/strong> is a powerful and emotional journey into New Zealand\u2019s notorious 2022 \u2018Parliament protest\u2019 &#8211; a massive uprising against Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern\u2019s severe <em>No Jab, No Job<\/em> mandatory Covid-19 vaccination regime, one of the most severe worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fed up with restrictions on almost the entire workforce, thousands of New Zealanders from all walks of life convoy to Parliament in early February 2022.&nbsp; On arrival in Wellington, without a government-issued \u2018vaccine passport\u2019, most are refused entry to hotels, cafes and amenities. Nevertheless, they are welcomed by tangata whenua (M\u0101ori) to Parliament\u2019s front lawn, where they set up camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brutal assault by police on 10 February fails to remove the protestors; rather it shocks the nation and attracts thousands more. As a storm approaches, the Speaker of the House, Trevor Mallard, orders flood-lighting, loud music and vaccination advertising to be played on repeat; the lawn sprinklers are also turned on.&nbsp; However, Mallard\u2019s torture tactics, along with the worst cyclone in 60 years, fail to dampen the peoples\u2019 determination to stay.&nbsp; They respond with humour and common unity while they wait to be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardern commands that all parliamentarians must ignore the protesters.&nbsp; Every politician, from both sides of the House, unite and comply, refusing to acknowledge the thousands of people below their balcony, in a rapidly growing \u2018Freedom Village\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, in a coordinated attack, the police ambush the camp at dawn, clearing everyone out using methods never before seen in Aotearoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A professional filmmaking team were on the road and embedded within the protest movement throughout the almost month-long convoy and occupation.&nbsp;
