Four years ago today, 3 December 2021, many of us were locked out of society - What was that about?! Why are so many wanting to forget? Well, just as we made River of Freedom to make sure an historical record is preserved on film - we are pleased to tell you about our next creative project:
We have written a book — Heart of the Protest — and last night on the eve of the anniversary of Segregation Day, we finally finished it and sent it to the printers!
This book extends on the film, another lasting account for future generations so New Zealanders never forgets. The writer, Siân Clement and I are extremely proud of how the 424 detailed pages with 145,000 words and 79 colour images has came together.
We had powerful material from our conversations — we wanted to further honour the voices of resilience at the protest, and unpack that time of the jab mandates and vaccine pass. The book dives deeper, weaving together a range of perspectives while keeping the same authentic, heartfelt storytelling as the film.
ONCE AGAIN, THE RIVER OF FREEDOM TEAM ARE CREATING THIS INDEPENDENTLY.

We’re grateful for the courage and generosity of everybody who shared their story with us. We’ve taken great care to keep the story factual, respectful, and true to everyone’s experiences. The book is 14 chapters with full-colour full-page photos.

Thank you again for being part of this, another journey.

Warmest regards Gaylene Barnes, Siân Clement & the River of Freedom film team
